How it works

While there are over 100 compounds within turmeric, it typically contains 3-6% curcumin by weight. Curcumin is hypothesized to be one of the major beneficial compounds. Theracurmin is the most bioavailable form of curcumin and is routinely used in supplemental forms, which allows a user to get the most benefit.

In fact, it’s likely that 25% of those following a typical western diet aren’t consuming enough. Source: Klevay, L. M. (2011). Is the Western diet adequate in copper? Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, 25(4), 204–212.

Its beneficial properties have been demonstrated through several mechanisms of action, and continue to be studied today. Particularly, curcumin has been shown to significantly reduce C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, in as little as 8 weeks. Overall, there is an overwhelming amount of research supporting turmeric’s role in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.

The case for supplementation

With use dating back hundreds of years, why wouldn’t you want a taste of turmeric? The FDA has declared both turmeric and curcumin as GRAS (generally regarded as safe) for human consumption.

The benefits of turmeric supplementation can be experienced in as little as eight weeks. Supplementation could be beneficial for:

  • Someone experiencing stiff joints, joint pain, or arthritis
  • Athletes or active individuals experiencing inflammation
