Key functions

It’s hypothesized that elderberries active the body’s immune system by stimulating inflammatory cytokine production.*

Elderberry supplements reduce the length and severity of cold symptoms and support immune health*

One study published in the Journal of International Medical Research enrolled sixty patients suffering from flu-like symptoms to take either elderberry or a placebo.

In fact, it’s likely that 25% of those following a typical western diet aren’t consuming enough. Source: Klevay, L. M. (2011). Is the Western diet adequate in copper? Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, 25(4), 204–212.

Subjects who were dosed the elderberry supplement reported symptom relief 4 days earlier, on average, compared to the placebo group.

Another study published in Nutrients followed 312 intercontinental air travel passengers before, during, and after travel. Researchers found that cold episodes occurred in both groups after traveling, but that the duration and severity of the cold episodes were reduced compared to the placebo group.

The case for supplementation

Studies done on elderberry show its positive effects come with taking elderberry supplements before and during an illness duration.

Elderberry research is still in its infancy, but studies done thus far are promising. Elderberry supplementation may be useful in supporting a healthy immune system and may have a positive impact on reducing the severity and duration of minor illnesses, like the common cold.
