Ashwagandha has been widely used in Ayurveda medicine

Ayurveda is an ancient form of alternative medicine that focuses on healing the mind and body using a combination of herbal and health supplements.

In fact, it’s likely that 25% of those following a typical western diet aren’t consuming enough. Source: Klevay, L. M. (2011). Is the Western diet adequate in copper? Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, 25(4), 204–212.

Ashwagandha supplementation and cognitive function have been studied in both healthy populations and those with mild cognitive impairments (MCI). Additional research is underway in populations diagnosed with various mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder.

Researchers have found improvements in both stress and generalized anxiety scores in studies focusing on supplementation with ashwagandha. One notable double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine demonstrated significantly reduced stress assessment scores and cortisol levels following 60 days of ashwagandha supplementation.

The case for supplementation

Studies have demonstrated observable benefits in as little as two weeks of ashwagandha supplementation.

Ashwagandha is regarded as generally safe for human consumption. There is a relatively low risk for medication and food interactions. More research needs to be done on the possible benefits of long term supplementation with ashwagandha.
